Private tuition agency founder supports introduction of Imperial College's entrance examination, as A-levels are failing universities.
Founder of Tutors International, a leading international private tutoring agency, Adam Caller discusses why he supports Imperial College's decision to ignore A-level results when differentiating between university applicants.

/Education News Articles/ - OXFORD, UK, July 05, 2008 - Adam Caller has declared his support for the decision of Imperial College, London to introduce an entrance examination independent of A-levels in order to differentiate between undergraduate applicants. The founder of the leading international agency for full-time private tutors, Tutors International, said "This is a bold move in today's educational climate, when there is so much pressure from the Government to use only A-levels to evaluate a university candidate's merit. This decision makes a statement about the erosion of A-levels standards over the last twenty years." For more information, visit www.tutors-international.com or call +44 (0) 1865 435 135.

"It may not be a very popular thing to say," Adam continued, "But I believe wholeheartedly that A-level standards are falling. In my opinion, there is no question that the standard of A-levels when I was at school and what's on offer now are quite different. Britain's top universities are now struggling to differentiate between candidates as the bar is being lowered year on year, consequently there is no way to pick out the very brightest students and offer them places on the basis of their A-level results."

"However, one-off entrance examinations on a university by university basis are not the best solution," Adam cautioned. "It would be preferable if tests to gain entrance into university were standardised, and used a system to measure underlying reasoning skills, rather than how well a student can rote-learn material. Tutors International specialises in sourcing full-time private tutors throughout the world, as a result I have seen a lot of different university entrance systems. I think that the American SAT I and SAT II system is very good in that it's standardised across the whole of America as a trustworthy system with which universities can reliably evaluate a candidate's academic aptitude. It's a great shame that the UK's A-level system is becoming compromised as an effective means of evaluation."
